2023 Tony Awards Nominations Announced
June 7, 2023
This year has been quite momentous for theater. Between one of Broadway’s longest running shows closing, shows closing soon after their opening and finally the Tony Awards, Broadway fans have had their hands full of exciting and not so exciting news. This year brings something extra special as it will become the first Tony Awards ceremony to air live and unscripted.
The 2023 theater season was especially difficult with the closing of many fan-favorite shows including “Into the Woods,” “Beetlejuice,” “1776,” “The Music Man,” “Phantom of the Opera” and more. The lack of interest in Broadway from the newer generations will continue to negatively affect Broadway as the shows continue to struggle with declining ticket sales.
Through its struggles, Broadway has had many new shows premiere and many classics re-open including “Camelot,” “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” “Parade,” “Bad Cinderella,” “Shucked” and more!
The Tony’s are set to air on June 11 from 6:30-8pm ET on Pluto TV and will be available at 8pm ET on CBS and Paramount+ with Ariana DeBose as the host for the second year in a row. This year marks the 76th annual Tony Awards and will be broadcast live from the United Palace in New York City.
The nominations for the 2023 Tony Awards were announced on May 2 by Lea Michele who currently stars as Fanny Brice in “Funny Girl” and Myles Frost, a 2022 Tony winner who just finished his run in “MJ the Musical” as Michael Jackson.
