Damascus girls Varsity Basketball ended their season on an extremely high note finishing with an overall record of 22-3, including a regional title win over Sherwood High School. Looking forward into the season as tryouts were slated for Friday and Saturday last week, after graduating three seniors who were a heavy part of the team last season. The team will need to add some talent to the top returning players. Those Returning players include Madison Slayton, Juliet Ventura, and CC Canada who will all share a significant role this season as seniors and seasoned players. Madison Slayton will continue to be a big impact player on the team this year after being named MCPS North player of the year last season, which is very understandable after a complete showdown of 22 points against Sherwood in the regional game alone. Damascus also had three players named to MCPS North All divison teams as well. Madison Slayton and Megan Antonishek were both named to the All-Division First team, and Juliet Ventura was named to the Second team all in their Junior year. Which is a huge accomplishment for all three of these amazing players.
With tryouts starting last Friday and continuing over the weekend, the team should be able to start practicing and moving ahead to prepare for the season to come very quickly this week. The Varsity team will have 20 regular season games, with 11 being in the Nest and 9 away at the competitors’ school. The team will also be traveling to Hilltopper Classic in Johnstown, Pennsylvania to compete in a two day tournament shortly after winter break starts. After Coach Ryan Hudy was named MCPS North Coach of the Year and was able to lead the team to State Quarterfinals last season and just falling short of a State finalist title, it is expected that he will have expectations to be more successful this coming season when the ball starts rolling this December.
Some of the best match-ups to look forward to this season are Clarksburg on December 20th, Magruder on January 13th, Northwest on January 24th and lastly, Whitman High School on February 21st. The girls basketball team is looking to have another great season, and it is important that they have all the support they might need. Support Girls Basketball by going to a game or two this season!
