Spring is coming up and that means baseball and softball. Baseball and softball are both popular sports here at Damascus, both sports have their similarities and differences with baseball being played on a larger field with a smaller harder ball and softball being played on a smaller field with a larger and lighter ball. Both sports emphasize teamwork, strategy, and individual skills like hitting, fielding, and pitching, and are enjoyed by many players and students here at Damascus. Last year the boy’s varsity baseball team finished 10-9 overall, with the girl’s varsity softball team finishing 20-1, a very impressive season. The boy’s varsity only had five seniors last year with 19 players on the team. The girl’s varsity softball team had seven seniors on the team with 17 players. The seniors for both girls’ and boys’ varsity softball teams played a big part in doing well for their team, and the juniors and sophomores will have to step up to fill their shoes.
The boys’ JV team had an overall record of 9-4. The girl’s JV team had an overall record of 9-1-1, tying one game against Sherwood. The first boys varsity game is against Clarksburg on Wednesday, March 26. A lot of the boys have been preparing in the off-season for when baseball practices and tryouts start back up by working out, sprinting, and getting in the batting cage. The girl’s varsity first game is on Friday, Mar. 21 against Seneca Valley, one of Damascus’s rivals.
The girl’s varsity has also been preparing in the off-season working out, sprinting, and getting in the batting cage just like the boys. Both the girls and the boy’s varsity teams want a state championship this year as they work hard in the season and the off-season.
To take a look from the inside we had an interview with a Junior who was on the baseball team last year, they would like to keep their name anonymous. They tell us that the team will still be pretty good despite the seniors who graduated. We also interviewed a player from the softball team who would also like to keep their name anonymous. They told us it would be hard to beat last year’s season with a 20-1 record.
Both the boys and girls are confident about this upcoming season in baseball and softball. The boys’ varsity will play their first game on Wednesday, Mar. 26, at 3:15 p.m. at home against Clarksburg, one of Damascus’s rivals. The girls’ varsity will play their first game on Friday, Mar. 21, at 3:45 p.m. against Seneca Valley, another Damascus rival. Come support the boys and girls as they fight for another great season. All the players and anyone who supports them are hoping for a state championship this year for both baseball and softball, lets hope they get one.
