Paying a lot of money and attention to college is exhausting, and many students and young adults struggle to do it. Making college free would be very beneficial, allowing students to stay focused on school work and not be stressed about the debt or money they will have to pay. The average federal student loan debt balance is $38,375, which is a lot for a student trying hard to pass classes and work a job.
One reason this would be beneficial is that it can allow students and young adults to start thinking about their future after college, like buying a house or a car they will use for the majority of their lives. However, because they have to pay for college, they can’t think about any of those things because they are too focused on the college fees they have to pay. This will also give them the chance to more freely pursue their passion. Financial concerns can also add stress. If a student is constantly worried about affording their next semester’s tuition or working a job to afford their bills, they’re not focusing enough on their classwork.
Another reason why college being free would be beneficial is that a more educated population would benefit individuals and the economy. A more educated citizenry could lead to technological innovations, medical breakthroughs, new industries, and the creation of jobs, bolstering our economy. Over 50 percent of students drop out of college. While there are grants and scholarship programs to help make college more affordable for these students, it sometimes isn’t enough and there’s only so much money to go around. Making college free could help eliminate this reason for not graduating. This could improve college graduation rates, as fewer students would feel the need to drop to part-time status or take a break from education for financial reasons.
Given the benefits of free college, I don’t know what we’re waiting for. You might be asking who is going to be paying for all students wanting to go to college, the answer would be the government. So much money that the government has is being wasted on things that are not necessary like, the government has wasted taxpayer dollars on programs, contracts, and grants that do not serve the American public’s interests. Now what about private colleges? Private colleges would not be free because they’re extra, which means you have to pay extra money. Private colleges aren’t necessary when it comes to getting a regular education or degree.
