My name is Saeed Damadi, and I am the driver for Route 2112, one of your dedicated school bus drivers. If someone had told me that one day I would be driving a school bus, I would have never believed it! Yet, here I am, celebrating over 11 years in this rewarding role. I truly love my job of transporting the futures of our country every day. In Montgomery County, there are 1,220 buses going to 208 public schools and collectively transport approximately 101,756 students each day. The purpose of my letter is to highlight the significance of school bus drivers like me and the valuable experiences we bring to the table.
In the intricate tapestry of the educational system, where every thread serves a vital purpose, school bus drivers often remain unsung heroes. While teachers, administrators, and support staff receive widespread recognition for their contributions, the role of school bus drivers deserves equal appreciation. These individuals are not only responsible for safely transporting our children to and from school, but they also play an integral part in fostering a secure and nurturing environment for young learners. Behind the wheel of these bright yellow buses are drivers with diverse and impressive backgrounds, including retired veterans, former lawyers, talented musicians, accomplished athletes, university professors, and successful businesspeople. Their education, experience, and commitment make them an invaluable asset to schools and communities.
For instance, I hold a bachelor’s degree in business management and a master’s degree in library science. Prior to becoming a school bus driver, I worked as a librarian, taught at the university level, and even dabbled in publishing. Additionally, I spent several years working for the United Nations. I was also a manager at Marlo Furniture for many years. However, when the recession hit, I found it necessary to change my career path. A friend of mine, who was already a school bus driver, encouraged me to give this profession a try. I took his advice, and to my delight, I discovered a true passion for my work and for contributing to the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) community.
My school bus resembles a small United Nations, as it is filled with students from all around the world. This diversity is not only reflected in the students, but also in our bus drivers, who come from various backgrounds and cultures. Each day, we create a vibrant community on our bus, where different languages are spoken, and unique perspectives are shared. This rich tapestry of experiences enriches our daily interactions and fosters an environment of understanding and collaboration. It is truly a privilege to be part of such a diverse and inclusive group, where we learn from one another and celebrate our differences together. First and foremost, the educational background of school bus drivers contributes greatly
to their effectiveness in their roles. Many drivers hold college degrees or specialized training in areas such as child development, safety management, and even educational psychology. This education equips them with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the complexities of interacting with children from various age groups and backgrounds. Additionally, their training often emphasizes safety protocols, ensuring that students are not only transported securely but also that they have a trustworthy adult to turn to during their commute. Moreover, the diverse backgrounds of school bus drivers enrich the experiences of the children they transport. Many drivers have led fascinating and accomplished lives prior to taking on this crucial role. Former military veterans bring discipline, a strong sense of responsibility, and leadership skills honed through years of service. Retired lawyers may offer valuable lessons in critical thinking and ethics, while musicians can inspire creativity and appreciation for the arts. Athletes can encourage teamwork and resilience, and university professors can introduce students to the joy of learning beyond the classroom walls. This wealth of experience allows bus drivers to connect with students on various levels and make the bus a more enjoyable and educational space. The responsibilities of school bus drivers extend beyond simply driving a vehicle filled with children. Drivers serve as the first point of contact in a student’s educational day, setting a positive tone through their interactions. They foster an environment of respect, kindness, and safety, which is especially important in today’s world. Drivers are trained not only to handle potentially tricky situations on the road but also to manage behavior among students, maintaining order and encouraging a sense of community. Through their vigilance and empathy, they contribute significantly to the emotional and psychological well-being of the students in their care.
In conclusion, school bus drivers are the backbone of the school system, providing essential support to students and their families. Their diverse educational backgrounds and life experiences uniquely position them to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the children they transport. As they guide their young passengers safely to academic endeavors, these dedicated professionals embody the spirit of community and service. It is essential that we recognize and celebrate the multifaceted roles of school bus drivers and appreciate them as not just transporters, but as vital educators and mentors in our children’s lives. Their contributions are invaluable, making our educational system richer and more supportive for generations to come.
I hope this letter sheds light on the important role that bus drivers play in the education system and how diverse our backgrounds can be.
