Damascus Varsity Cheer leading is successful in yet another competition bringing home another first place finish once again. On October 22nd, Damascus attended the Francis Scott Key Invitational in Carroll County. After a successful routine finish against 10 other teams, Damascus was able to come home from Francis Scott Key High School with a first place finish with an overall score of 115.5/130. Which is currently the highest High School cheer leading score in the state of Maryland. As competitive as the routine was, being able to hit with little error was a perfect finish to the competition. The cheer team’s routine was a positive push to the team’s abilities, allowing them to be able to build themselves and their skill set higher to prepare for regional s, to which they will eventually defend the state champion title in a few weeks to come.
Freshman Samantha Apo, who participates in varsity cheer as a side base and is a former acrobatic, believes that her team performed extremely well. She also emphasized how happy she was with her team’s outcome. Which comes to no surprise with a big first place finish.
Being able to compete against 10 other teams including Arundel High school, South Carroll High school, and Frederick High school and coming out on top is a big deal for our first ladies moving forward into the season.
After a successful competition in Carroll County, Varsity Cheer leading also attended counties on October 27th and came home with a 3rd place finish behind Sherwood High School who took 2nd, and Churchill High School ended in 1st place. The Damascus Varsity cheer leading is very well known for being extremely competitive and even more goal driven and hardworking. Although a 3rd place finish is not what the team was looking for beforehand, they won’t allow the season to diminish after one slip up as regionals and states are steadily getting closer and closer. After taking home first place in Counties 19 times, winning regionals last year, and being the defending state champions in the 2A Class, the community is very confident in their abilities to bounce back after a slight slip up, and are sure regionals will go much better for our lady Hornets as they begin to prepare and rebuild over the next few weeks.
