The Oregon Ducks have had an outstanding season, being the only team still undefeated. They defeated Penn State in the Big 10 game 45-37 as the final score. The Penn State coach, James Franklin, said “First thing is you’ve got to give Oregon and Coach Lanning credit.” He was proud of his team for going against the number one team in the country, and having a chance to win.
Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel had an amazing game with four touchdown passes, and 283 passing yards. At the heart of this matchup is the contrast in offensive styles. Penn State’s dynamic junior quarterback, Drew Allar, has developed into a well-rounded player this season. Allar had to fight against the strong Oregon defense that was proven to be difficult to break down. Oregon, led by coach Dan Lanning, is known for up-tempo spread offense led by Dillon Gabriel
Both teams had very powerful defenses, and that’s what the game initially came down to. Penn State’s defense, anchored by linebacker Abdul Carter, has been one of the best all season. Oregon’s defense led by Jordyn Birch, has been great at causing turnovers this season. The Oregon defense caused two turnovers against Penn State, with Oregon having none.
For Penn State, this game was to validate their place as an elite team in college football. For Oregon on the other hand, it was to keep the perfect record and stay the number one team in the country. Both teams had a lot to lose, and it came down to whoever wanted it more.
