Every single year Rockefeller Plaza lights up a Christmas tree in the big apple. They’ve been keeping up this tradition since 1931 with the first lighting ceremony appearing in 1933. The iconic Christmas-tradition has been featured in Christmas films that many people love such as “Home Alone 2” (1992) and “Elf” (2003). Erik Pauze, the head gardener at Rockefeller Center, picked out the 2024 Christmas Tree in West Stockbridge, Mass.
What’s unique about the 2024 Rockefeller Christmas tree is its story. Back in 2020 the tree was actually sought out by Erik Pauze. The tree belongs to the Albert Family where newlyweds Earl Albert and Lesile Albert planted it back in 1967. Now that it’s been 57 years, the Norway Spruce tree stands at 74 feet tall. When Erik made his inquiry in 2020, Leslie, a huge Christmas fan, passed two days earlier. Her husband, Earl, agreed to Erik’s offer and claimed that it was a sign from Leslie. The tree was cut down on Nov. 7, and arrived in New York Nov. 9. There are many videos recorded by locals of the large tree making its way across the city streets delaying traffic. For the 2024 winter-season it’s estimated that over 50,000 multi-color LED lights will be used to decorate the tree. For the topper, the tree will have a Swarovski star.
Kelly Clarkson, a renowned American singer and songwriter, will be the host of the Rockefeller Center Tree lighting on Dec. 4. The broadcast for the lighting will be titled “Christmas at the Rockefeller Center” and is watchable on Peacock and NBC. According to NBC News, the last time a Christmas tree from Massachusetts to NYC was 1959. Multiple guest appearances including choirs, actors, and celebrities are also expected at the lighting though it’s not revealed yet.
If you’re intending on visiting New York City this winter time be prepared to be standing in long large crowds. Make sure you bring comfortable clothing and stay safe. If you’re looking for activities to do after visiting the tree you could always skate under Rockefeller Center. Some other alternatives include visiting the Winter Village at Bryant Park, watching a show at Broadway, and the iconic Dyker Heights Neighborhood Lights.
As of Nov 15. It’s been announced that Earl Albert has suffered a stroke and his family is unaware of whether or not he’ll be able to see the Christmas tree lighting in December. There is amazing news that he is expected to recover and his family has stated that he’s in excellent care. His family also requests that if you’d like to make him a Christmas card you send it to the following: Earl Albert, P.O Box 109, West Stockbridge, MA 01266. Best wishes and prayers for Earl’s recovery and hopefully he’ll be able to see his beautiful tree with lights in New York City.
