Every year, there is an SGA election to select the leadership team. The chosen students will serve as the official voice of the other students in the school; this kind of responsibility isn’t entrusted to just anyone.
Chiemela Nathan is a senior at Damascus High School. She came from Hallie Wells Middle School and is the SGA president. Nathan expected high school to be completely different. She expected high school to be like the movies with jocks, nerds, and popular girls, but it wasn’t. Her time as a senior was up and down. At one point, she had a lot of assignments to work on; at another, she had to meet college deadlines; and at another, she had to prepare for every last event. She claims high school is a big roller-coaster. Her favorite memory was going on a field trip through the horticulture department with her friends and spending the day together. Looking back at the years she’s been here, Nathan said she would’ve tried to cherish each moment with friends and make amends with people. Or think wisely before being friends with people. Nathan says if she could choose a year to go back to, it would be her freshman year; she said the spirit was amazing, and there was nothing to complain about. Next year, Nathan will attend the University of Maryland. Of course, being the president of the SGA comes with many responsibilities. Nathan must run meetings, represent student interests, and organize school-wide events to foster school spirit.
Every president needs a vice president. Kennedy Scott is a Senior at Damascus High School. She participates in the track and dance team. She came from Hallie Wells Middle School and is the Vice President of the SGA. Kennedy expected high school to be a different experience. She expected high school to be very hyped and more stressful, but as time went on, she came to love the things that happened during her time here. Her favorite memory was the very first time she got detention for trying to sneak out during lunch Sophomore year. She claimed the excitement was like no other at the time. Looking back at all the years, Scott said she would’ve been more social with others while being an underclassman. If she could choose any year to go back to it would be junior year. Scott is committed to Campbell. As the SGA’s Vice President, Kennedy also has a job to do. Scott must act as the primary assistant to the president while managing internal operations and representing student interests. Scott also has to manage committees, oversee elections, and maintain communications.
Assisting the president and vice president is the SGA secretary, McKayla Luc. Luc is a senior at Damascus High School. She participates in the soccer team and is the manager of the boys’ volleyball team. She came from Hallie Wells Middle School and is the secretary of the SGA. Luc says she expected high school to be exactly how it is. The stress, the hype, and the activities she was ready for them all. Her time as a senior was very fun and interesting, she says she got to make many new friends and met many new people from the events she attended. Looking back at her years, her favorite memories were all the football games and all the school dances, she says. Each time she goes its always a new experience. If she could choose any year to go back to, it would be freshman year. Everything was new but very easy compared to the other years; nothing was as stressful and hard. Luc will be attending Duquesne University next year. As the secretary of the SGA, she must keep accurate records, facilitate communication, and organize documentation for meetings and events.
The other SGA officers were unavailable for an interview. Next school year, there will be new nominated members for the SGA. The new members will carry on what these seniors have started. All in all, thank you to the current SGA for all the work they put in for the school and for being a voice for us students.
