There seems to be a disease spreading through the Orioles clubhouse, one that curses players to become injured. Many integral players are suffering painful injuries right at the start of the season. These injuries can be extremely detrimental to Baltimore’s success later in the season. Below, some of the injuries are listed and explained.
Ryan Mountcastle (1B)
On April 11, Mountcastle seemed to stumble when running between first and second base. He safely landed on second but immediately collapsed. Mountcastle was rushed off the field and brought into the medical area to get a full checkup. They deduced that he suffered a left foot fracture that would leave him to miss a substantial amount of the season, at least 60 days.
Adley Rutschman (C)
Rutschman has been on the Injured List since April 11 for left ankle inflammation and is set to return soon. According to insiders, Rutschman had been dealing with a nagging, but manageable, pain in his left ankle for a few days before bringing it to the trainers. Put in simple terms, it is a mild ankle sprain that’s causing him some discomfort. It is still in his best interest to rest and recover as much as he can. Rutschman re-entered the roster on April 22, against the Kansas City Royals and had a fantastic game.
Tyler O’Neill (OF)
On a day where players should’ve been resting and preparing for the upcoming series, April 9, O’Neill fainted due to hydration and caused a mild concussion from hitting his head. At first fans thought O’Neill was just sick, as the Orioles management announced he was feeling “under the weather.” But that was just a way of them covering up his extreme dizziness and nausea that occurred due to the concussion. O’Neill is said to return within the next few days.
Keegan Akin (LHP)
Akin suffered a left groin strain when pitching on March 25. After his injury, he was placed on a rehab assignment with the Orioles Triple-A team, the Norfolk Tides. Akin has made much progress there, pitching to the best of his ability while still monitoring his pain.
Jackson Holliday (2B)
Holliday’s injury has been on fans’ minds since the pre-season. In a batting practice session that took place in Feb., Holliday exited with pain in his right hand. It was announced that he broke the hamate bone in his right hand and would need surgery before returning. So far, Holliday has made great progress with his rehab assignments and is working his way through the Orioles affiliated teams to regain his knowledge of the game.
