An international baseball tournament, featuring all of the big names in American baseball, was proposed in May of 2005. The World Baseball Classic (WBC) was created as a way to showcase international baseball players in a way the Olympics never could. With very strict anti-doping rules and three year gaps between each tournament, the anticipation to watch this tournament grew for fans.
There are six ways to be eligible for one of the international World Baseball Classic teams. The players of the teams need to only fit one criteria in order to participate. To participate for a country, you have to be a citizen of the country, eligible for citizenship in that country, a legal resident within that country, be born in that country, have one parent who was a citizen of the country or have one parent who was born in the country. The players also aren’t all necessarily MLB players, many play casually in the country they are representing or are college players in America. With so many ways to compete with a country, lots of teams are made up of a mix of familiar faces and fresh skills.
There have been five tournaments since the inaugural one in 2006. In 2006, 2009 and 2023, Japan took home the title, 2013 crowned the Dominican Republic as the champion, 2017 had the United States as the winner and, most recently, the 2026 champions being Venezuela.
The tournament takes place during March, typically taking up the time that players would be attending Spring Training. Lots of MLB players benefit from the exposure to top-tier pitching during this time. They use this time to prepare for the regular season since many participants are MLB players. In 2026, there were 78 current MLB players and 190 other players that haven’t quite reached MLB stardom yet. The oldest player in the tournament was 44 year-old Alexi Ramirez of Cuba, while the youngest was a 17 year-old, Joseph Contreras. Contreras played for team Brazil as a pitcher and currently lives in Ga.. He is a Vanderbilt baseball commit and fans will surely remember his name in a few years.
