Minutes before midnight on Nov. 18, the Baltimore Orioles announced their trade with the Los Angeles Angels to acquire outfielder Taylor Ward in return for right-handed pitcher Grayson Rodriguez. The official trade was one-for-one, one player for another player. In the MLB, one-for-one trades are so extremely rare since it is so difficult to find two players completely equal in value. Most trades include cash considerations, prospects, multiple players, or extra draft picks.
Rodriguez was drafted first-round to the Orioles in 2018, and has been playing for them since his 2023 debut. While many people are shocked at this trade, it’s not surprising that the Orioles let Rodriguez go because his short time with the Orioles has been plagued with injury. Rodriguez pitched in 23 regular season games and even one playoff game in his rookie season, pitching 123.2 innings total by his last appearance in Oct.. His earned run average (ERA) only being 4.35 over his 123.2 innings. By the start of the 2024 season, Rodriguez was already facing trouble. In April of 2024, it was reported that Rodriguez was feeling some discomfort in his right shoulder and was placed on the injured list for almost three weeks. His official diagnosis included “right-shoulder inflammation.” This was only after pitching 34 innings over six games. His return was in May and he dominated on the mound; it was almost as if he spent no time off. Rodriguez went on to play 13 more games, until July 31, 2024. He didn’t know then, but that would be his last game as a Baltimore Oriole. After his game that day, he would be checked out by the trainer for some more discomfort in his right shoulder. This discomfort would turn out to be a strain in his right shoulder lat muscle, requiring surgery and ensuring he wouldn’t play for the rest of the 2024 season. Unfortunately, they also discovered bone chips in his right elbow, requiring a more extensive surgery. Rodriguez ended up missing the rest of the 2024 season and the entirety of the 2025 season as a result of his recovery plan.
Acquiring Taylor Ward might be a season-changing decision for the Orioles. Ward was drafted first-round in 2015 to the Los Angeles Angels and he made his debut in 2018. Over the past seven years of his career, Ward has stood out offensively and defensively. On defense, he has played over 5,000 innings with the Angels with only 23 career errors. His fielding percentage is almost perfect at .983. On offense, he is an absolute beast. In 2025 alone, he recorded 132 hits over 579 at-bats, driving in 103 runs. He is reliable, playing in 157 of the 162 games in a season.
While Ward has proven his worth with the Angels,it is still uncertain how he will fare in Baltimore. Adding his powerful bat to the lineup and magnetic glove into the outfield rotation, fans should be ready to witness some excitement in the 2026 season.
